Shakespeare & Company

Shakespeare & Company offers an innovative approach to book selling. Didn’t find the book you want on their shelves? No problem—they’ll use their “Expresso Book Machine” to print you a copy while you enjoy a cup of coffee. When this Manhattan-based bookstore decided to open a location in Philadelphia’s Rittenhouse Square, they hired Becker & Frondorf to oversee the conversion of a former bank into a hip new place for book lovers.

Blending Old-World Charm and Modern Technology

We helped the Owner find the right architect to realize his vision for the 5,000-square-foot café and retail space. The building, which dates to the 1800s, required new mechanicals and utility service, along with upgrades to create ADA-compliant bathrooms. Its location along a busy urban street with no back entrance made construction staging a challenge. Our team managed the renovation process and helped to navigate the complex permitting requirements that included approval from the Center City Residents’ Association. Featuring exposed beams, original brick, and new storefront windows, the finished store is a masterful blend of old and new.
