The First Troop Philadelphia City Cavalry is one of the oldest and most decorated military units in the country. Originally organized in defense of the colonies and to serve as George Washington’s personal guards, it’s been in continuous service to the United States for more than 240 years. B&F worked with this unique institution to carefully renew its historic facility through a series of phased improvements that repaired the façade and updated the gallery space to protect their precious artifacts.
After receiving a RACP grant, First Troop asked B&F to manage exterior repairs and renovations to their gallery space. B&F collaborated with the design team to execute a phased approach that accomplished the most critical façade issues first and coordinated exterior improvements around inclement weather, while ensuring proper safety measures were taken for work occurring 2-3 stories about a busy city sidewalk.
Our Project Managers also coordinated gallery renovations to anticipate long lead times for procurement and maximize a limited budget. We worked with a local casework shop to cost effectively create museum quality display cases. A special room with a clean agent fire suppression system was created to protect priceless artifacts including the flag flown by Washington as he crossed the Delaware River and letters he wrote. The completed renovations will help to preserve the historic home and amazing legacy of this iconic Philadelphia organization.
