Becker & Frondorf played a pivotal role in the renovation and underground expansion of the Folger Shakespeare Library, home to the world’s largest collection of Shakespeare-related materials. Brought in just before construction began, Becker & Frondorf managed the building’s transformation, including the creation of new exhibition galleries, permanent public storage, and the full exhibition development process. The team successfully coordinated these efforts to align with the Library’s vision and long-term goals.
As Owner’s Representative, Becker & Frondorf managed the selection and contracting of critical services such as exhibit and media design, content development, AV integration, mount making, fabrication, and installation. Becker & Frondorf also ensured seamless collaboration among architects, engineers, exhibit designers, and fabricators, meeting all technical, environmental, and aesthetic requirements. This was especially vital for the custom installation of the First Folio, where strict climate, lighting, and security standards were maintained to protect the Library’s rarest materials.
In addition to technical coordination, Becker & Frondorf helped the Library maintain day-to-day operations throughout construction. The team’s oversight kept the project on schedule and within budget without compromising quality. The result is a modernized, secure, and immersive space that provides a permanent home for the Shakespeare Collection and ensures future generations can engage with one of the world’s most important literary and cultural treasures.
