At the National Constitution Center, Becker & Frondorf played a critical role in bringing the First Amendment gallery to life, a 1,500 square foot space dedicated to exploring one of the core pillars of American democracy. This gallery marked Phase I of a multi-phase renovation of the Center’s core exhibits. The space showcases more than 20 significant artifacts, each representing a fundamental freedom: religion, speech, press, assembly, and petition. Key objects such as a draft opinion by Justice Louis Brandeis, a Tinker family armband, and the 1971 Pentagon Papers offer visitors tangible connections to pivotal moments in the defense of civil liberties.
Becker & Frondorf’s project managers coordinated closely with a diverse team of curators, exhibit designers, and contractors to ensure that the gallery’s design was both visually compelling and operationally sound. The team navigated the challenges of integrating historic artifacts into a modern and interactive exhibit environment, striking a careful balance between security, preservation, and visitor engagement.
This project highlights Becker & Frondorf’s ability to manage culturally significant exhibit work with rigor and care. Every detail was managed with precision, recognizing that the artifacts themselves carry powerful stories of dissent, activism, and resilience. From artifact handling to multimedia integration, the team brought a level of expertise essential to delivering a gallery that honors the First Amendment’s enduring legacy and provides an accessible and impactful experience for all visitors.
